Columbus ranked 18th in Forbes list of most wired cities

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Columbus is ranked 18th in Forbes magazine’s annual ranking of America’s Most Wired Cities. The list ranks the top 20 “most wired” U.S. cities, determined by access and usage.

From Saturday’s Columbus Dispatch:

Columbus was the only Ohio city on Forbes’ list this year, a departure from past years. From 2006 through 2009, Cincinnati also appeared. In 2006 and 2009, Cleveland did, too.

“It’s not a surprise. What’s going on is a mixture of two main things. One is that Columbus and surrounding communities have invested in broadband and cyber. There’s great infrastructure and growing infrastructure. The second point is that there’s a lot more awareness about Columbus as a technical center outside the region. Word is getting out.”

Columbus’ ranking of 18th is its best. The city had never been higher than 20th, and last year had slipped to 29th.

“It’s nice to see the improvement,” said Tim Haynes, vice president of member services and marketing at TechColumbus.
