With 300 million users, Facebook nearly as large as U.S. population
Facebook’s user base is nearly as large as the U.S. population and, for the first time, the site has turned a profit.
That was the double-barreled announcement Tuesday from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who thanked the site’s users for helping its online community cross the 300 million threshold. There are about 307 million people living in the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
“We’re just getting started on our goal of connecting everyone,” Zuckerberg wrote on the company’s blog.

As far as business models go, the Facebook illustration is flat out incorrect. How many companies could entrepreneurs create that rely on such heavy investment (what’s the number invested to date in FB?)
When you really start to look closely at FB, as we all know it is a marketing machine, which is terrific. This is unfortunate, because virtually all other services seem to apply this same basic model and it is not the way to go. Yes, FB is large, but their big strategic challenge is how to turn this massive unstructured data into useful and relevant “structured data” that helps people in addition to entertain. Thanks.

I will never use facebook again. I don’t like the idea of going online to gather information about someone else. That takes away the fun of talking to the person.
